In a recent interview, Wojciech Szczęsny shared insights into how he studies penalty takers before every match.
“I study penalties a lot. Before each game, I review the last 20 penalties taken by the two or three designated takers of the team we’re facing,” Szczęsny explained.
He added that experience often helps in identifying patterns. “Sometimes you gather information throughout their careers. Some players take penalties differently depending on the moment or the scoreline. I try to gather as much information as possible.”
Referring specifically to Kylian Mbappé’s penalty, Szczęsny said, “In Mbappé’s case, it was clear. He scored his last penalty in that same way. He was in a very confident phase, and I knew he would choose the same side.”
